|
Polycythemia refers hematologic disorder with increased hemoglobin, hematocrit and red cell count. There is a high incidence of peripheral neuropathy in polycythemia rubra vera which is probably secondary to ischemia due to increased blood viscosity and platelet dysfunction. Bell’s palsy accounts for almost three quarters of all acute facial palsies. Bell’s palsy is peripheral lower motor neuron palsy, which manifests as the unilateral facial weakness. As previously known, the main cause of Bell’s palsy is thought be reactivation of latent herpes viruses. We report a case of Bell’s palsy as the presenting feature of polycythemia rubra vera. This report implies Bell’s palsy can occur as not only inflammatory neuropathy due to viral infection but also ischemic neuropathy.
