Abstract
Polycythemia refers hematologic disorder with increased hemoglobin, hematocrit and red cell count. There is a high incidence of peripheral neuropathy in polycythemia rubra vera which is probably secondary to ischemia due to increased blood viscosity and platelet dysfunction. Bell¡¯s palsy accounts for almost three quarters of all acute facial palsies. Bell¡¯s palsy is peripheral lower motor neuron palsy, which manifests as the unilateral facial weakness. As previously known, the main cause of Bell¡¯s palsy is thought be reactivation of latent herpes viruses. We report a case of Bell¡¯s palsy as the presenting feature of polycythemia rubra vera. This report implies Bell¡¯s palsy can occur as not only inflammatory neuropathy due to viral infection but also ischemic neuropathy.
